About the Nonprofit HR Center
About the Nonprofit Human Resources Center

At Action Without Borders/Idealist.org, we know how important it is for you to find great staff and resources to help support your organization's mission.

This resource center was created to help address some of these issues, and to provide nonprofit HR staff from all backgrounds a place to learn and tools to help sustain their work.

Specifically, we hope that this resource will:
  • Help to ensure that the human resources function is recognized as a critical piece of the strategic, long-term success of any organization.
  • Provide a comprehensive overview of the primary HR functions, even for the beginning practitioner
  • Provide a unique set of resources and training to help inform this valuable work
  • Create an opportunity for users of this center to contribute to its growth by suggesting and creating additional tools and resources. We want to hear from you!

Who is this Center for?

The Nonprofit Human Resources Center of Action Without Borders/Idealist.org seeks to assist staff members at mission-based nonprofit organizations who are directly responsible for the strategic, managerial, and/or administrative aspects of the HR function. We seek to support generalists as well as specialists; VPs of HR as well as HR Directors and Assistants; Volunteer Administrators; and even Operations or Business Managers who handle HR activities. In smaller organizations, this person may simply be the Executive Director or the Administrator. No matter what your title is, you will find practical resources and advice in the Nonprofit HR Center.

For a brief overview of nonprofit HR and a guide on how to make best use of the Nonprofit HR Center, visit the Introduction to Nonprofit Human Resources section.

Goals

The goal of the Nonprofit Human Resources Center is to help organize an active, self-identified community of nonprofit human resources professionals around the world. By supporting nonprofit HR professionals in the development of their unique practices and philosophies, and by encouraging nonprofit organizations to assign strategic value to the HR function, the project hopes to strengthen the nonprofit sector as a whole. While there are many parallels between nonprofit and for-profit HR, there are unique aspects of mission-based nonprofit HR which merit a unique approach. These include the use of unpaid staff (volunteers), the need for creativity with limited resources, the lack of affordable training for staff, high turnover, and staff burnout. In light of this, even aspects of HR that are identical in for-profit and nonprofit contexts are approached from a nonprofit perspective.

Action

In 2008-9, we hope to facilitate a series of local and regional nonprofit HR convenings in cities around the United States. In addition, you'll soon be able to subscribe to our e-newsletter to stay on top of nonprofit HR topics and events. Additionally, the Nonprofit Human Resources Center will continue to develop in response to the needs of the community. History

Action Without Borders/Idealist.org has worked with nonprofit HR professionals since the organization began in 1995. Each day, over a quarter of a million people hear from us by email about job, volunteer, and internship listings that match their interests. From the thousands of nonprofit job, volunteer, and internship postings on our website, to our nonprofit career fairs on campuses throughout the United States, we have encountered both the immense creativity of, and the enormous challenges faced by, the professionals who staff the nonprofit sector. And with our efforts to educate university students and mid-career professionals about careers in the nonprofit sector, as well as our nonprofit career guides and other resources for nonprofit job seekers, we have sought to promote the development of more and better-informed candidates for nonprofit positions. In fact, all our efforts at Action Without Borders can be seen as an attempt to serve the community of nonprofit HR professionals.

More specifically, the Nonprofit Human Resources Project arose out of two national conferences Action Without Borders coordinated in 2003 and 2004. In the spring of 2001 we assembled nonprofit HR professionals from all over the United States, and asked what was needed regarding nonprofit HR training, resources, and networking opportunities. We heard nonprofit HR professionals calling for a national platform, geared towards the challenges and strengths of the sector, offering training and specialized events. The First and Second National Nonprofit Human Resources Conferences were a direct result of these focus groups.

Held in June 2003 in Philadelphia, PA, the First National Nonprofit HR Conference was the first national event of its kind in the United States. In June 2004, the Second National Nonprofit HR Conference was held in Portland, OR, and out of several hundred attendees, many were repeat participants who traveled from the East Coast.

Following the conferences, our HR Community Partner, Melissa Herwaldt Riches, began the tremendous task of compiling information and resources for the Nonprofit Human Resources Project's HR Web Center. Though Melissa has since left our staff to pursue other ambitions, she remains committed to the project's goals. We thank Melissa for her determination, dedication, and diligence in bringing this project to life.

To continue overseeing all aspects of the project and facilitate more connections among nonprofit HR professionals, Action Without Borders hired Rose Grech as the Manager of our Nonprofit HR programs in September 2006. The Nonprofit Human Resources Center was launched in October 2006 alongside a completely overhauled version of Idealist.org. Before leaving the organization to explore other interests, Rose implemented a new topical structure to the Nonprofit HR Center.

In early 2008, Cary Hixon joined Action Without Borders as Director of our Nonprofit Human Resource Program. It is our hope that Cary's expertise and Idealist's new capabilities will help make the Nonprofit HR Center a valuable meeting ground and resource for nonprofit HR professionals of all backgrounds.
